Fraudsters are selling fake hand sanitizers in local markets. Excise Taxation and Narcotics Contol’s Director-General Suhail Shehzad has stated that these new sanitizer making companies have no license to produce hand sanitizers.

Due to coronavirus, there is an unprecedented surge in the use of hand sanitizers. Taking its advantage, fraudsters are selling fake hand sanitizers in local markets. Excise Taxation and Narcotics Contol’s Director-General Suhail Shehzad has stated that these new sanitizer making companies have no license to produce hand sanitizers.

They came to know about fake hand sanitizers when a medical store owner near The General Hospital informed that an unknown salesman from a new company offering to the medical stores their hand sanitizers at low cost.

The shop owner added, “Every day a new salesman came to meet us with their hand sanitizers which are completely like water with bad smell and odorless. They are offering us a great profit to display their product in our shops. Because of COVID-19, people believe that sanitizers are the best source to protect themselves from this virus but incase if they use these hand sanitizers without any knowledge then these sanitizers won’t killing any germ.”

The fake hand sanitizer manufacturing company uses very cheap ingredients. A good hand sanitizer ingredients are ethanol, gel, aloe vera, and water. But these fake companies increase the quantity of water and decrease the quantity of gel as it is costly.

Keeping in view that these fake businesses will not harm people anymore because the Government has decided to put the effort into supplying maximum ethanol to the manufacturers.

Federal Minister of Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry stated that 23 companies which are involved in the making of fake sanitizers. He tweeted,

“Dear all! As per Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority; PSQCA sample testing following 23 brands of sanitizers are not in conformity with the WHO standards, we have advised health departments to remove these brands from the stores.”

According to Business Recorder, PSQCA declared fake brands which included;

These are the brands that are selling fake hand sanitizers at a very low cost. The ministry of health advised the Health Department to remove these fake hand sanitizers from stores and ordered to stop their supply.

One of the PSQCA officials accepted that there are no standard rules for making sanitizers with the authority. This product is a disinfectant and it should be under the control of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).

After asking the question from a DRAP official, he said that only the surface disinfectants came under the domain of DRAP, not the human disinfectants.
